Be Careful When You Joke About Chocolate

My favorite all-time candy bar is the Wispa, manufactured by the Cadbury company.

So, naturally, when the word Wispa hits the news, I'm all ears -- or eyes.

Turns out the winning joke at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this summer is the following: "I heard a rumour that Cadbury is bringing out an oriental chocolate bar. Could be a Chinese Wispa."

I don't get it.

A young friend speculated that the joke may be in the way the Brits pronounce the word, Wispa, or possibly confusion with the word "whisper". Even weirder was the reaction of my coffee klatch, none of whom actually know what a Wispa bar is. They thought the joke could be interpreted as a possible warning that the Chinese would be taking over the company.

My favorite Wispa bars made in China? Now, that's definitely no joke.

The Book Barn DOES have books

The Book Barn DOES have books. The copies at The Book Barn are not (yet) autographed, but if you want an autographed book, let Barb or Bob Spear know, and we'll work that out. I was in Leavenworth last week, and will be there again before the official launch on Saturday, March 23.

My son, Rick (my army brat, born at Fort Leavenworth) and I made the trip to Parsons to pick up the books printed for Central Plains Book Manufacturing.

After a stop at the front office, where we were greeted by Merry Crain, we were directed to the loading docks at the other side of the building. Someday I'd like a tour of the printing facilities, but as it was, we did get a glimpse inside the building, which, believe it or not, is BIGGER than the outside.

If you are ready to print YOUR book, I'd advise you to talk to Merry Crain or Becky Tate at Central Plains Book Manufacturing. Their offices are still in Arkansas City; they are now a division of Sun Graphics, Parsons, where the actual printing is done.

Launch Date Set At Book Barn

The date is set – Saturday, March 23, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at The Book Barn, 410 Delaware, in downtown Leavenworth.

Yesterday, I got an okay from the Women’s Community Y, to donate $1.00 of every sale by The Book Barn during the month of March to WCY.

WCY is a 4-Star (KQRIS) Kansas Quality Improvement Rated center that follows all NAEYC accreditation standards. THeir mission is to build confidence and love of learning, giving students a solid foundation to go on to school ready to suceed.

WCY is also – yummmm – the sponsor of the annual Chocolate Event!

The Book Barn does not have the books from the printer yet, but they will soon. I’d love to see everyone at the launch, but if you can’t get there on that date, $1.00 of every book will still go to the WCY.

And The Book Barn website is HERE.

Waiting . . . waiting . . . .

It's Friday, February 8, and Emergency, No-Guilt Hot Chocolate is almost ready for the printing press. We're waiting now for the proof copy, the last chance to catch any mistakes. The postal service hasn't yet given up Saturday deliveries, so there's still a chance it will be in my hands before the week is over.
